ARB Rear Bumpers Come to North America
Sep 12, 2006
ARB has finally introduced rear bumpers for the North American market, and in doing so, they have built a unit that addresses every weakness I've seen in third-party and home-made bumpers for Jeep Wranglers. Sure, this rear bumper is pricey, but if you want the BEST with absolutely no compromises, then this is the bumper for you.
- Easy to Open and Close
By far the biggest problem I've seen with bumper-mounted tire carriers is the latch and hinge mechanism. Latches are frequently difficult to operate (especially those home-made jobs that use a bolt for a latch) and hinges are either too loose or too tight. ARB designed a latch mechanism that would be just as easy to open/close as a car door, and they chose a hinge assembly that incorporated tapered roller bearings for a smooth but rattle-free hinge. Usually the use of a bearings in the hinge would make the swing away carrier difficult to swing open or closed when the feel is off-camber or on a slope, but ARB's system includes a gas strut to control the movement. To ensure the reliability of their design, "ARB approached a mechanical and environmental laboratory used by the Australian Army for evaluating the structural integrity of military vehicles. The facility’s Random Vibration Platform simulated the effect 15,000 miles of continuous corrugated roads would have on the rear bumper."
- Wheel Bolt Pattern Flexibility
The ARB bumper/tire carrier is designed to handle a variety of wheel bolt patterns. If you upgrade to a different wheel bolt pattern after buying the bumper, it'll still work with your new wheels.
- Tire Size Flexibility
For their Jeep TJ rack, their tire carrier can handle up to a 34" tire while still allowing the use of the factory third brake light. Remove the third brake light and you can fit even larger tires.
- Carry Multiple Tires
Depending on the model, the ARB rear bumper can carry up to two tires, or a tire and a jerry can holder.
- Hi-Lift Friendly
The bumpers incorporate multiple Hi-Lift jacking points.
The tire carrier's stud plate allows the spare tire to be padlocked in place, to prevent theft.
- Lots of Accessories
Accessories include a Hi-Lift jack holder, camp light mount, and heavy duty antenna bracket.
