We Lost Harbourview But the Future Looks Brighter
Jan 17, 2001
Good day everyone,
Before I begin, I must thank everyone that has been involved for the past 2
years in the battle for the creation of a designated OHV Park within the
CRD. I must say that today's announcement by the CRD Board was a bittersweet
victory for us all. First off, as you may well have heard by now, the CRD
Board voted unanimously in favour of contributing $3 M towards the purchase
of the Seraphim lands. This decision did not come easily for the board after
last week's delay in their vote in addition to 2 more hours of discussion
this morning. In the end, the Board voted in favour of the purchase but with
the stated commitment that a committee be struck to find an appropriate area
for OHV use within the CRD as they recognize the needs of OHV users (read
tax payers) in the CRD. Representatives from the various OHV communities (4
wheelers, ATV, motorcycles, etc) will hold a place on that committee.
The bottom line, we lost Harbourview (which was pretty much expected from
the beginning) but as a result in our kicking up such a fuss, OHV users have
gotten noticed by the CRD Board and now they have gone on record recognizing
our needs and are willing to address them within the boundaries of the CRD.
This has been the message that we have been trying to get across for the
past 2 years, and now we have been heard. This is a victory indeed! Of
course I am saddened that we will no longer be able to drive through the HV
lands, enjoy the view from the top of Mossy or a swim in the lakes but it
was a good, honest fight that has led to the recognition of our sport and
the establishment of an area(s) designated for our use.
Thank you again,
--
