I'm Mad As Hell And I'm Not Going To Take It Anymore
Mar 30, 2010
Motorized recreationists have been getting shafted for the past decade and more. Trail closure after trail closure. One of our biggest losses came when the dirt road network near Sooke, BC, was shut down, thanks to The Land Conservancy and the CRD. Now we finally have a chance to fight back. YOU CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!
Terrance Martin has shown that something can be done. By working within the system, meeting with politicians, and developing a growing network of supporters, he and the city of Sooke have managed to force the CRD and its supporters to the negotiation table. The proposition? The city of Sooke will allow the CRD to create a park in the Harvourview Road area IF the CRD will grant motorized recreationists access to many of the existing roads that we've used for decades.
As expected, there's a lot of resistance to this, and the extreme environmental groups are mobilizing their troops to deny motorized recreationists the opportunity to share in the use of a park. A park that they are trying to establish on land that is 4th- or 5th-growth forest, and that has been used by motor vehicles since the early 1900's. This could be a turning point in the pop culture discrimination that has seen thousands of hectares of Crown land turned into the private preserve of hikers, many of whom have no interest in hiking on the old road networks that they've managed to wrest from other British Columbians.
The reason these enviro groups have been successful in stealing so much land from motorized recreationists is because, quite simply, we have been too damned lazy to do anything about it. We've decided that it's no big deal to drive farther, and farther from home to enjoy exploring the back country. Others have simply driven around gates and lived with the risk of being fined or arrested for driving on land that used to be open to the public, but was now the sole preserve of those few hikers who actually had an interest in visiting the area. But I, for one, am sick of being marginalized by the eco extremists. If you're like me, and you're mad as hell about what has happened, then YOU MUST go to the website for the South Island Motorized Recreation Advisory Council (http://simrac.ca) and become a fan. That one, simple, action will show your support for motorized recreation in the Sooke area, and Southern Vancouver Island. If they can demonstrate that they have lots of supporters, everything they say will be given more weight when it comes time to press for the rights of motorized recreationists.
Now is the time to act. Click on the link RIGHT NOW and become a fan. It's time to turn the tide and stop the land grabbers from shutting us out.
