I've had a Hi-Lift® jack for about as long as I've had my Jeep. And for all that time, I've known that Hi-Lift®, Tiger JackTM and Jackall® style jacks are essential pieces of off-road equipment. What I didn't know until recently is that my jack, which I have relied on all these years, was incomplete. That's right, it was missing a crucial component. That component is the Maasdam JackMate.

The JackMate is, at first glance, simply a heavy duty replacement for the optional top clamp. A REALLY heavy duty replacement. It's made from tough 1044 steel with spray-arc welds. It's no surprise that it can handle 8,000 lbs of force. Besides allowing you to clamp on to objects, you can turn it over and install it under the lifting mechanism. In this configuration, you can use it as a spreader.

But it is much more than just a top clamp. For starters, it provides an easy attachment point for a large clevis (1" dia. clevis pin). A larger clevis makes it easier to use with straps, ropes and large chains. Of course, it is also stronger, too.

Winching using the clevis attachment hole.

Winching using the chain slot.

It also contains a chain slot to accept a 3/8" chain. This slot is particularly handy because attachment of a chain is swift and secure. If you've used a jack as a winch, you will definitely appreciate this time-saving feature when you are trying to adjust the chain's length.

Here's a typical situation: Project TJ is high-centered while facing downhill. We need to jack it up but, as you can see, the jack's base can easily slip, causing the jack to kick forward. Clearly a dangerous situation.

The solution was to use the ClawfootTM spikes to allow the jack to bite into the ground.

The difference was immediately noticeable. The grip spikes dug a inch or so into the ground before raising the front of the Jeep.

As you can see, the JackMate didn't sink too far into the ground. In fact, it sank just enough to allow a firm grip without significantly reducing the jack's lifting height.

The JackMate can be left on the jack for future use. Placing it between the baseplate and the lifting mechanism seemed like a good place since the minimum height I generally use is taller than the JackMate.

Here's a photo of the quick release pin that allows easy removal/installation of the baseplate.

The JackMate can also be used in place of the baseplate. At the bottom of the JackMate is the "Clawfoot," a series of grip spikes that are sharp enough to dig into the ground but wide enough to support lots of weight. This gives the jack a sure, secure grip that minimizes slippage. This is a very crucial safety feature for us fourwheelers who often find ourselves in situations where we must lift our vehicles on uneven terrain. The Clawfoot alone provided enough justification for me to buy a JackMate.

The JackMate comes with two quick release pins. One is for locking it in position on the jack bar. The smaller one replaces the cotter pin that holds the baseplate to the jack bar. There may be situations where you need to remove the baseplate so this new quick release pin is a great convenience. Maasdam knows you'll be using this product under adverse conditions so they've given it a flawless plated finish so you don't need to worry about leaving it exposed to the elements.

The JackMate is a necessity for any fourwheeler. Get one before your next adventure and be prepared.
